Background

Mordecai was born into a world of wealth and privilege, but his life was anything but ideal. His father obsessed with his legacy regarded his children as nothing more than an extension of him. They were not allowed to have opinions nor live in a manner that their father deemed unacceptable. Any child that failed to live up to their father's expectation were dealt with, and he didn't hesitate to neutralize those he believed incapable of living up to his standards. He had many children with a number of women, each hand picked by him for traits he deemed desirable. Mordecai's mother was one such woman. She was said to be a distant relative brought from far away so their two branches could become allies. Others knew the truth, or at the very least they suspected. It was true that she came from far away, but she was more closely related than lead to believe. Just how close was up for debate, but there were whispers that he was her father.

The other thing that was certain was their marriage was a political one, but it was doubtful that they were married as a way to align their two branches together. The truth was Mordecai's father was infamous for his magical talents, and many families would give their daughters to him as a means of appeasing him and keep him from directing those talents towards them in unfavorable ways. It is believed that Mordecai's mother were thrown to the wolves in a manner of speaker, and while she had some idea of what awaited her--rumors spread after all--there was no way of knowing she was to become one of his wives. Only the best of the best were permitted wife status, and it was easy to see why Mordecai's mother was granted marriage. She was the very idea of femininity. She quickly learned, however, that marriage didn't grant her husband love or tenderness. She was still nothing more than an incubator for his legacy--just one that was regarded slightly higher than the rest. He just took more care not to break her when they did the deed.

They were married for several years and had multiple failed pregnancies before she found herself pregnant for the last time. The midwife warned Mordecai's father that his wife was incapable of carrying a child to term--especially not after so many rapid attempts. She advice him to abort the child and try again within a few years when her body had a chance to heal. It was unsurprising to anyone that he ignored the midwife advice. He cared nothing for his wife's well being, Only that she served her purpose and if she was unable to do it than she should perish in the attempt. There was no denying this pregnancy was taking a toll upon her, and that she was unlikely to survive the birthing process. The only question was would the baby? The answer came with a resounding yes. It was not just one baby that was born that day, but two--Mordecai and his twin sister Mirthe. Their mother, however, perished just as everyone suspected she would.

This was just as well for Mordecai's father as he never allowed the mothers--even his wives--raise the children as he found their influence unfavorable. At first, he had no issue keeping the twins together. He had many twins over the years and often raised them together with no real consequences. In fact, he often raised any children born within the same year together. Often pitting them against each other as a means of ensuring not only the best survived, but they develop in the manner he wished. However, Mordecai and Mirthe proved to have an extremely tight bond. They often spoke in that secret language that twins were known for, and even when they silent they seemed to understand what the other was thinking to such a level that they were able to work as a single unit in any fight. This was not the first close-knitted bond Mordecai's father encountered with his children, and did what he had done in all the other cases---he separated Mordecai and his sister.

Yet, this did not have the desired affect. Mordecai and Mirthe's affection for each other went beyond their father's comprehension. They would find each other again and again despite their father's best effort to ensure they did not. This could not stand, and he decided that the best way to ensure they stayed separated as to send one to an early grave and he was going to make the other commit the deed, but true as he might he couldn't convince either sibling to turn on each other. He did the only logical thing left in that situation and killed one himself. Some might question why he didn't kill both. The answer was simple. If he had killed both they would have won and he couldn't allow that. He choose Mirthe a he deemed a daughter less worthy, and he made her death as horrific as possible to show Mordecai the price of disobedience. The next time he ordered Mordecai to kill he would do so without hesitation

The lesson had the desired affect as Mordecai returned to the other children his age, and showed himself to be the very idea of what his father wished for his legacy. More than that he became his father's perfect assassin---no perfect weapon--killing both anyone his father directly ordered and anyone he might hint he wished dead. He became quite proficient at picking up these hints that his father sometimes had to directly order him to to assassinate someone. Deep inside Mordecai was brewing with an insatiable desire for revenge. He wanted nothing more than to put an end to his father, but he knew that he was of many talents--including magical ones that made killing him an difficult task to say the least. He worked in secret, trying to figure a way past his father's magical defenses and permanently put an end to him. However, death would find him before he could see his vengeance completed.

He saw within Mordecai a kindred spirit and when the light faded from within his eyes the slaugh king extended him an offer he couldn't refuse---he would become one of his flock and his father's soul was as good as his because none escaped the full force of the horde---not even someone of his father's magical talents. True to his word. the sluagh king helped Mordecai collect his father's soul and brought him to the sluagh realm to be tormented for all eternity if Mordecai desired. Satisfied with a It was on a job gone wrong. It was inevitable he knew--play the harbinger of death as a mere mortal enough and you end up becoming the one slain. He had just hoped that he would have destroyed the monster who plucked his sun from the world before death came knocking. The worse part was there was nothing really remarkable about his mark. He for all intent and purpose should have been an easy mark--one that Mordecai should have been able to kill with his eyes closed, but when faced with the possibility of death some people find themselves more capable than previously believed. And along with a bit of luck, Mordecai found himself laying within a pool of his own blood while his mark slowly limped away. Little did he know that his quest for revenge would not end here as he was being watched by the king of the Sluagh--the undead horde that wanders across the land claiming the soul of any who crossed their path.completed purpose Mordecai allowed himself to slipping into the horde mentally---traveling across the land with no thoughts. It is unclear how long he was within this state before he woke up, and while he doesn't recall much for his time as a mindless member of the horde Mordecai did know enough to be wary of the slaugh kings if he renewed consciousness was discovered.

It, however, quickly became clear that Mordecai was unable to keep such a thing from the sluagh king.  The reason for this was each member of the horde was deeply connected to the king and he knew their thoughts as if they were his own. He knew the very moment Mordecai had woken up, and the only thing he was angry about was that Mordecai had taken his sweet time waking up. He had watched Mordecai intently while he had been human not because he sought another mindless member of the horde. Those could be easily attained as the horde traveled across the world stealing souls as any soul that isn't being kept within their sluagh realm becomes a member of the horde. No, he had watched him because he thought Mordecai was worthy of being one of his princes--a member of the horde who took control of a section of the horde when it needs to break into smaller pieces. A prince could also become king if something ever happened to the current one as they shared that deep connection that the king did with the entire horde with their section.

He adjusted to his role of prince to such a degree that there was no mistake to anyone within the horde that the king had chosen well, and many believed that the king intended for Mordecai to inherit title of king when he stepped down, or rather as it was known went into the long rest. Each member of thehorde went into the rest. It was what Mordecai went into after he had collected his father's soul. Even if the king had not intended to make him one of his princes he might have woke up. Not every average member of the horde were mindless and traveled along without a single thought. There were times when the king wished to go into the long rest, and sometimes the king intended to never wake up. The old ones knew what signs to look for to indicate a king might be heading into that direction, and to them all the signs not only pointed to their current king going into the long rest that he never intend to wake from but he had hand selected Mordecai to assume his title when he did.

Mordecai wouldn't learn if their suspicion were correct on if the king intended to hand over title of king of the sluagh to him it was a long way coming. So long in fact that he thought the others had been mistaken, and he was glad as he had no desire to rule the entire horde. His section was enough, but than he found himself separated from the horde. He is unclear how it happened. One moment he was among them and the next he was all alone. The silence that arose from not being among the horde was deafening. Even without knowing the thoughts of every member of his section, there was still an emptiness that came from the horde's absence. Over time he had grown accustom to it, but he find himself flocking towards crowds due to how comforting he finds them. He still possesses his sluagh abilities and will from time to time steal souls as old habits are hard to kill, but being a lone sluagh--even a prince--has greatly reduce his soul stealing abilities. He can only claim the soul of those who are already compromised.
